I work as an airline pilot. As a consequence I am away from my family a great deal. I often have to work public holidays, and have little control over my leave dates. It is not the cost of a holiday, it is just spending quality time with my family. For instance we are keen skiers, a healthy challenging sport that my son adores. In practical terms anyone who wants to ski with their kids is forced into the February half term and this is virtually impossible for me to get off. Of course education is vitally important, and I support my 11 year old in every way I can. But education and growing up is not all about the classroom. It is ridiculous that caring, loving and devoted parents are being criminalised just for showing those very attributes. The school holiday system is based on religious festivals and getting in the harvest. It is totally outdated for the modern lifestyles we lead. What we need is a complete rethink of the school year and the way we allocate holiday time. What we don't need is government persecution.
I am a parent and a business owner in a coastal town. I am affected in two ways. Firstly, it is impossible for me to take a vacation during school holidays. This is the busiest time for any coastal town. The one opportunity to make any money as the rest of the year you only just survive, so you need to be open and ready for business not on vacation. Secondly it has been noticed that this new ruling has made a big impact on the tourist industry, as soon as the children went back school the place became a ghost town. Takings dropping by two thirds. Before there would have been a steady trickle of trade from some families. Also it is turning families into liars, people pretending their children are ill so they can have time together. I feel that I would be better off going unemployed. At least then I would be able to have a holiday. Mr Gove has managed to do what no other politician could do. Make me decide not to vote conservative.
